Yes, this is done now. It will be availalble with the next 0.10.0-beta6
release.

To be more precise, digiKam now use database to identify which file is already
downloaded from the camera. 

Old version do not use Database but a flag from Gphoto2 drivers (Canon only).
It's a uncomplete way that do not support USB mass storage camera. Now, with
Database flags all camera type are supported.
