Then I don't understand why the original and the target histogramms differ 
in shape (quite stongly). It seems (and you write) that you don't use the 
original histogram for the "live" histogram. That's an important difference 
to the above mentioned high level algorithm and quite a usability problem.

If you really think that you need two histograms (for me one histogram (as 
in Gimp, Picasa, Bibble) seems to be more cleanly designed), please make 
sure that both of them are accurate.
