Isn't this a packaging problem of (K)Ubuntu? and therefore a downstream bug?
This distribution seems to set wrong env vars. I'm going to close this now as
DOWNSTREAM.
Geoff, if you still have a problem with that, you should ask in
ubuntuforums.org for help.
