but the QPainter issue shouldn't be the problem here, I also had this a lot but
digiKam never crashed. Maybe I'm wrong...

you said you are using beta2? So you can't have this patch installed yet. As
Gilles mentioned, please try to compile for yourself or wait for beta3 from
openSUSE...
