I have the same problem. No crash but no preview when clicking on an image.

beta1 from Kubuntu intrepid
beta2 from a ubuntu ppa
beta2 svn build by myself from today (Revision: 848058)

I'm able to get back to the thumbnails view with Esc key.

Btw: How should the "drag line splitting view" workaround work?
