I still vote strongly for cloning. Have you ever tried to remove eg 10 dust particles with inpainting? It seems to be an eternal job. Those 10 dust particles are removed in gimp using the clone tool in just a few seconds. However at the moment you have to start gimp in order to do the job which takes time. Inpaiting has the real disadvantage that it needs too long to do its job, has to many options that may be adjusted. And in many cases the result for spot removal is not as good as a manual cloning which is usually completely invisible even if you look at the photo in 100% zoom.

Even cloning could be programmed to work for a series of photos by always cloning the part of the photo at delta_x, delta_y position from the spot. And then again cloning would be even more fast compared to inpainting when it has to be applied to more than one photo.
