(put you in CC, because I am not sure if you read digikam-devel).

Concerning stitching, hugin is the way to go on linux
  http://hugin.sourceforge.net/
(it is also possible to do a raw and 16 Bit workflow with it).

- digikam does do 16 Bit
- krita does 16 Bit, http://www.koffice.org/krita/
- cinepaint (derived from an earlier version of gimp) does 16 Bit
