Did you use Achim Bohnet's packages referred to  at 
http://www.digikam.org/?q=download/binary/ ?

(Sometimes running `kdeinit` just once after installation did help 
wonders for me in a situation sounding similar ...)

Which versions are listed under "Help"/"About digikam"
