I get the impression that you exclude the possibility that the problem lies in how digikam interfaces to SQLite, or in the thumbnail display code. If so, why?

It would be interesting to redo my experiment, but not with ktrace, but instead running digikam in gdb with tracing on the SQLite calls. I'll see if I have the time to set this up the coming weekend.
