unfortunately, I am running out of ideas ...

The mesage
digikam: ERROR: ImagePluginLoader: Failed to load plugin ImagePlugin_Core
sounds relevant (never had this myself before ...).
Just for completeness (I am sure you did):
You do have LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LDPATH defined appropriately?

Does someone else have any idea how to proceed here?
