I suspect it is more a gphoto problem - let's see ;-):

Could you try the following commands and report their output:
a) connect camera, what is the output of dmesg
   (only the camera related part)
b) gphoto2 --list ports
c) gphoto2 --auto-detect
d) gphoto2 --abilities
e) gphoto2 --list-folders

It could also be a permissions problem, or
another suggestion in this long thread
  http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125696
was to install the libgphoto2-2-dev package.
