Here's an image.  *-orig is the original.  *-thumb is the thumbnail created 
with the command

djpeg -scale 1/8 img_7951.jpg | cjpeg > thumbs/img_7951.jpg

and *-rotated is the result of rotating this thumbnail using digiKam.

Do you need any more info?
