To be frank (through clenched teeth ;) I should mention about second
contender to description of metadata: Dublin Core.

Simplified version is... simple. Only 15 elements:

title
creator
subject
description
publisher
contributor
date
type
format
identifier
source
language
relation
coverage
rights

But full version is much, much longer:

Several points against DC:

1. Simplified version is really simple and doesn't cover some specific
   to photography things (eg. difference between photo and subject on
   it, location)
2. Full version is really, really long and complicated.
3. Another thing against DC is weak support for it in Adobe applications
   while IPTC Core is AFAIK complete - and IPTC is directly part of XMP.
