Using subversion is a nice add-on (I can imagine it as a plug in) but I would not recomment it for the base package.

1. It opens up a whole new pandora's box of dependencies. Digikam already depends on a dozen libraries, why add a dozen more?
2. The "keep originals" idea should be transparent and the technicalities totally hidden from the user. There should be no need to set up a Subversion repository, additional pathnames, seperate directories or running services.
3. The idea of "check out" and "check back in" is an additional step that would make it unnecessarily hard for users.
4. AFAIunderstand, you can even now check your Digikam directory into subversion while Digikam is running, and no development effort is needed from Digikam's side. The most that is needed are a few links in menus and context menus. Right?

If you can make Subversion integration as transparent as (or more so) e.g. SQlite integration in Amarok (nobody knows, and nobody CARES, that Amarok uses a SQL backend for storing and managing its data), then I'm all for it.
But if users then get confronted with new terms ("checkin", "repository", "svn" files, whatever), then Digikam will become too geeky for the normal user.

Sorry, but I've been spoiled by iPhoto for too long. It does have drawbacks, but its interface and usability is one thing that Apple got RIGHT. ;)
