I'm sorry to say, but it looks even worse.
As you asked I downloaded and compiled exiv2 svn rev. 984.
Ran it with digiKam svn rev. 604964.
Selected a few images, edited the caption-field, apply, crash.
The same, but forward, crash.
Tested on a single file, and the same results.
