I have already reproduce this problem in the past. I have suspected a bug in Exiv2 library used by digikam to manage metadata. But not sure...

Can you give me the Exiv2 release installed in your computer ? 0.10.0 ?

Here, to develop digiKam, i'm using current Exiv2 implementation from svn.
