IMHO this would be *much* better. Otherwise you'll run the risk of losing your 
originals. I'd even say that digikam could store a file 
"albumpath/originals/.digikamoriginals" and _not_ hide the originals folder. 
(This file would then indicate to digikam that these pictures are the 
originals.)  This would make it easier to access the originals from within 
konqueror. I hate having important personal data stored as hidden files or 
directories.

All in all, I like your proposal. But I'm not one of the developers...
