I think this is the way picasa2 works too. It's very fast in Picasa actually... 

Dunno if this would be really desired or neccessary though. I use Picasa in windows (oeps), but still cant get used to this way of working. I uploaded several fotos to a website, thinking i uploaded the corrected version, but finding out they didnt have the corrections, because they are Picasa internal only, until explicitly exported by the user... 

 #17, this sounds like the way that would really work for me. F-spot is nice but still quite immature...and gnome ofcourse, no flame intended ;)
