I like to see a way to burn images directly on CD using digikam. At the moment there is a kipiplugin that creates an album on CD, but that is not very usefull for creating backups etc..
However, IMHO integrating k3b in digikam like in your vision would make the digikam GUI a bit bloated. I'd rather like to see a kipi-plugin that allows the user to select images or albums to burn on a disc.

But it is up to the digiKam team if they decide to implement your suggestion, and how they will do it :o)

Meanwile, your proposal already works using separate windows: start both digikam and k3b, create a new data-CD project in k3b and drag-n-drop images or albums from digikam to k3b.
