I think it will complicate matters in a way that it is inpossible to satisfy everyone. So someone edits it in gimp, then edits it in digikam. What should we do then, protect the original image (before gimp) or the modified one (after gimp). I can tell you there will be a bug where a user screams: "hey, my modification in gimp cost me ages, now i reverted to the original image and now my gimp work is lost. I'll keep #0 in mind, butthe rest not, maybe another developer wants to work on this, you never know.
