I have forgetted to answer the question from renchi.

The reason to not change the default behavior of the desktop
is that the desktop is perfectly handy with the single click usage
but the opening of the photos in digikam is not.

I Prefer the single click on desktop to execute a program,
but the single-click in digikam to select the photo
and double-click to open the editor.

By making the option configurable, everyone can handle it 
the way it prefers. (again , personal taste)
