I agree this would be a nice feature.

It would appear the exiftools http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/, will provide the functionality you are seeking in this bug report.

It is available in Debian as  libimage-exiftool-perl, which is available at http://packages.debian.org/libimage-exiftool-perl

However, extension of this into digikam via something like the kaddressbook geo entry system would be great for mass tagging files.
