I think basically this is a good approach and it solves my wish of beeing able 
to look at the EXIF data without always opening and closing a modal dialog.

I have a camera that makes photos in a 3:2 aspect ratio. Since my Monitor is 
4:3 I always have black bars above and below the image in the imageeditor or 
in showfoto.

These black bars are wasted space and it would be nice if I could use it for 
the tab-dispay. This way the photo itself could be displayed larger. At the 
moment with the tab at the left side it eats up quite a lot of space making 
the photo appear rather small but keeping the black bars above and below the 
photo because of the 3:2 versus 4:3 aspect ratio. 

Another point that would be helpful in my eyes would be an option that allows 
me to change the size of the font used for displaying eg EXIF data. This way 
the space used by the vertically aligned tab could be minimized according to 
the personal needs of the user.
