Thanks for the answer. Now I can compile the code. Perhaps someone could put a 
hint on the digikam webpages in the download section where the svn checkoout 
is described. The information there does not say where to put the 
extragear/libs stuff. It only says how to do the checkout but not where to do 
it. Perhaps a quick description of the toplevel directory structure would be 
helpful.
