Many fixes for Stage

That's for zagge to say... But once pushed, I'll take care of forward
porting to master. I've done that for your trivial changes as well. At
this point, I'm cherry-picking from 2.9 to master because there's stuff
in 2.9 that shouldn't go in master (some easter eggs...)

Impressive set -- that should make 2.9.8 a lot better! 2.9.8 is to be
released next week, btw.

Hm, I might have missed that. I usually do the cherry-picking and merging,
