Unless I misunderstand what you mean by "save" here, I think this is a very 
strange idea.  The default style is used to determine style parameters for 
things that are undefined in other styles.  This is necessary to save.

All default styles and all named styles should always be saved.  Automatic 
styles are created at save time so those are always ad-hoc.
