Most of the problems were fixed in 2.4.1 (or is it the upcoming 2.4.2. I must 
admit I can't remember just now.)

There are also some similar problems with line spacing that can not be 
addressed until 2.5

I can't tell you how to get 2.4.1 in ubuntu - what the distributions do is not 
really related to calligra as such, but maybe some other reader know how. 
otherwise i'd suggest contacting ubuntu
