Hm, is the thumbnail stored in an ODT by Words just a white square also for 
everyone else in master?

Is KoDocument::d->pageLayout possibly not used in KWDocument (I would guess, 
given the multipage/layout nature of KWDocument)?

Or was the overload of KoDocument::generatePreview(...) lost for KWDocument 
recently?
