First, what phonon backend are you using? See Settings > Configure
Amarok > Playback > Configure Phonon: Backend tab. Usually a choice
between Xine, VLC, and Gstreamer. All available in packages, and all
with various strengths and weaknesses. While Xine usually works best
for me, it is unmaintained, and the future is VLC and Gstreamer.

Next, you might try running Amarok from the console: amarok -d
--nofork and watch the output when the sound shuts down. Is Pulseaudio
giving up, if you have PA installed? Or is the backend or phonon
itself reporting a problem?
