Shout out to Ralf Engels

Hey all,

Ralf Engels submitted a patch that does some massive cleanup/sanity work
in some of the scanning code. It was a huge amount of effort, and since
I didn't get to thank him in the merge and we don't really have a place
in the changelog for this, I thought I'd give him a shout out here.
