New install has codec but won't play mp3s

I've met the rapidly-passing-over-mp3s situation.  I remember that mamarok has 
said that this is because codecs are missing, but I've installed the fluendo 
codec.  I did restart amarok - is there something else I need to do to get 
amarok to recognise the codec?
