Tracks only partially playing

I have two systems, a laptop and a netbook, sitting side-by-side, both running 
amarok-2.1.1-1.fc11.i586.  On the netbook there are no problems at all.  On 
the laptop tracks will play for a while - anything from 30 seconds to 90 
seconds, then the track races to the end, giving out only a series of rapid 
clicks.

I have checked that the tracks play in kaffeine on the same hardware, so I 
suspect that there is no fundamental problem.  Also, since the netbook doesn't 
show the problem, it isn't either an application problem as such or a 
packaging problem since both use the same package.

So - something must be interfering.  Can anyone point me to a sensible 
troubleshooting plan for this?  Thanks.
