Handling of compilations in collection browser

Currently, if an album is marked as a compilation, the artist for the album 
(albums.artist in the database) is set to NULL. This is then used as the 
definition for a compilation (i.e. if an album has a NULL artist, it is listed 
under various artists).
This poses a problem when the user wishes to set the album back from being a 
compilation, to being listed under the album artist's name. Is there any 
reason why there is no 'compilation' field which would allow the artist to be 
retained.
If there is no particular reason, how easy would it be to add such a field?
