Nice proposal.

For font rendering I'd use freetype, rendering into an offscreen buffer 
and using that as a texture (this is what SDL_ttf do, but can only be 
used for SDL surfaces AFAIK). You need freetype
if you want to be able to draw non ASCII strings.
