you just have to look for the configure options. between them there are some
options to fine tune the installation directories. having amarok2 installing
in a different directory than amarok 1.4 would let you use both of them (at
the same time if you want). for example if amarok 1.4 installs by default in
/usr/bin and /usr/share/doc/amarok you'll just have to put /usr/local/bin
and /usr/share/doc/amarok2 as paths for amarok2. in this way you'll have
amarok 1.4 start with amarokapp and amarok2 start with amarok without
modifying the PATH variable and without overwriting the old amarok 1.4.
so just have a look for the configure options and then put the right ones.

ps. if you have kde4 installed (and you'll need at least kdelibs as
requirment) you might already have configured different paths for kde4 and
kde3.5 apps and the kde4 build system would install amarok2 into the kde4
directories (usually /usr/kde/4.0/bin ). but this depends on the distro
you're using.
