It shouldn't be terribly slow.  Not sure where you got it from; if it's
built with debug flags, that can slow it down significantly.

Lack programming knowledge in general, or just the Amarok codebase?  If
it's the latter, then you should be able to get up to speed; if it's the
former, Amarok is very complex and is not a good place to start  :-)
