Oops.  Forgot to finish this paragraph.

We need a tree view because it reflects the underlying user-constructed data 
structure.  I ran into sizing and rendering trouble getting Qt's Tree View to 
deal with complicated inline editing widgets, so that's why I split the 
editor out into a separate area.  But it's a design that I'm not committed 
to; I made the demo more to illustrate the underlying logic, not the design.  
We can change the view easily enough.
