Ah, thanks for the pointer. 

The instructions on the page Mark points to are kind of sparse.
For anyone else who's interested in running Amarok 1.4.4 on 
Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy), more detailed instructions are here:

Not sure, but I think those instructions presume that you have 
uninstalled the base Amarok using Adept before beginning.
