Amarok doesn't handle the file and artwork upload, but it is done by
the libgpod library (also used by gtkpod). I'm pretty sure that there
is no work to introducing this type of splicing into the library, but
you would be best to ask Jorg (from gtkpod) himself. You can email the
list at gtkpod-devel at lists.sourceforge.net

Would be interesting to know how iTunes does it, though.
