I think  ratings should also be persistent in id3v2 tags.

I currently use a command line tool to do round-trip import/export into
amarok's database so I don't lose my preference data.
Storing them in the actual mp3file is much better than storing in a
database, since I often find myself recreating the database.

I am personally maintaining my collection using the same tags that
musicmatch jukebox uses, which involves writing to a named COMMENT tag
in the id3v2 spec. It uses libid3 3.8.3, because I am unable to get my
program working with taglib due to a segfault in the library (i
reported it - http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129725)
and as soon as I can write and read musicmatch tags to id3v2, I plan
on extending amarok to give me persistent preference data that is
round-trip compatible with mmjb.  I'll make it an option you can
switch on or off.
