Well I have solved the issue.  It was due to SuSE's change of 
permissions.  As root it works fine but as donn it fails.
The /dev/mixer was set to 660 which gave no program the right access. 
It is late here so Friday I will fix the problem.  I did find even kmix 
failed due to the mixer permission.  Another security headache!
It reminds me of roots /dev/ CD privilege and yet not having permission 
to use xcdroast however, a "users" had rights to use xcdroast but not 
the CD.
