Perhaps -- I'm not sure if it's that, or not finding any results, or some other cause -- perhaps a debug-enabled Amarok build would reveal the stalling operation.
FYI, there's a similar lack of cancel-button and long pause with the cover-queryer, when it's about to return a null result (despite running a fast computer on a fast network connection).

Thanks for setting the record straight; it's existed for me since before 1.3.8 and I was unsure whether to file a bug report.
