I would like to fix this properly in Phonon, if possible.

To that end, I'd like to ask people who have a debug build of Phonon and are 
already running amarok with the --debug option to set the environment 
variables PHONON_DEBUG=1 and PHONON_XINE_DEBUG=1 (assuming you are using the 
Xine engine) before running amarok.

Then, if you get this happening (a track will be skipped, and "Trying to re-
initialize Phonon. Fingers crossed." will appear in the output), post the 
output here.
