Perhaps the version in virtual box is not updated?

Indeed; the reason for this is that the Plasma Active Add Ons has installer 
helpers that register for the kinds of assets they know about. there is no 
“generic” asset downloader, however, so Add Ons does not specifically know 
about an asset type, it does not know what to do with it.

The best answer to this is to have a generic asset handler that simply 
downloads files into ~/Downloads, or whatever the most appropriate folder is 
depending on the mimetype.

I’ve filed a bug report for this.
