Yeah, I think there should not be any difference betwee locally stored 
resources (e.g. file on disk), abstract (e.g. a location) ones and online ones 
(bookmarks).

The bookmarks engine does this, it should set a type from the Bookmarks 
ontology which is especially extracted from the SDO to get at its type. Can 
you look at this engine (plasma-mobile/dataengines/metadata/bookmarks) and 
tell me what you're missing there?
