After some fiddling I must say it's not as easy as I thought it'd be.

The reason why the modification works on my theme is because the theme I used
as a base implemented an older shadow rendering method as a library, which
makes it possible to create the different shadow strengths.

I'm pretty sure a revert to that shadow rendering would fix this issue, but
there surely were reasons to move away from that in favor of something else.
