So there is some software running in the background, which changes the
settings. Please try to find out which process is responsible. If this is the
kded4 process, you could find out which kded module is responsible by following
the steps described at
http://kdepepo.wordpress.com/2011/05/11/troubleshooting-kded4-bugs/

Additionally, please check if this happens with any distribution, or is limited
to Ubuntu.
