Thanks for your help Federico. I'm afraid I've no clue how to recompile the
kioslaves on my system (Kubuntu 13.10), so I'll just stick to mounting the
share first and then accessing it that way, since that appears to give good
performance.

My voice doesn't mean much, but I---and likely the majority of people using
relatively modern hardware---would be happy if someone implemented the patch
already with a reasonably safe buffer size. We're talking about 400x
performance gains!
