A possible solution might be creating a (new) small thumbailer for x-desktop
files.
If it has ThumbnailerVersion=2 it should overrule the textthumbnails.
The preview would just be a bigger version of the icon.

Do you agree with this solution Frank? It is a bit of a workaround and I don't
think it should be pushed upstream.

Making a thumbnailer is rather easy, look for an example online. I'm not going
to write it though, I don't use textthumbnails.
