I cannot reproduce this issue with today's master. Steps I used are:
- make sure you have an icon with a long name
- move focus to any other icon
- select the long named icon with a selection rectangle, without touching the
icon image
- press DEL key

Actual results:
- Dolphin asks me to delete the selected icon, not any other icon

Are you indeed using KDE 4.10.4? On some other bug report, you mentioned KDE
4.4.5.
